Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 Review

Welcome back, Tiger. After a lackluster performance from last year, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 excels in every area imaginable. The addition of Woods’ personal coach, Hank Haney, introduces a significant new skill improvement system with a series of practice drills and advice. Online play is better than ever, thanks to the addition of four-player simultaneous action (without the need to wait on sluggish AI players). The gameplay is back with a natural swing system that isn’t littered by constant hooks and slices. More courses and livelier announcers would have added to the experience, but otherwise Tiger Woods 09 is a supreme golfing achievement.

NCAA Football 09 Review

If you go into NCAA Football 09 expecting a world of change from last year’s effort, you’re in for a letdown. Not much has changed between the two versions, outside of the inclusion of an online Dynasty mode (for up to 12 players), the ability to download customized rosters and slightly improved interaction with your home crowd. It still feels rushed with noticeable glitches (especially in the roster menus) and questionable reaction by the defensive line, where you’re so sure you have a receiver in your sights but inexplicably miss him anyway. It just about looks, sounds and plays as it did before, solidly but without anything “wow”-worthy to justify your $60 purchase. Rent it before you decide to take the plunge.

Madden NFL 09 Review (PSP)

It’s hard going from the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Madden NFL 09 to the PSP edition. Whereas the console games feature the Tron-inspired Madden Test and enhanced visual effects, the portable version is a stripped down rehash that gives us deja vu from last year. A Rookie mode simplifies the controls for beginners (don’t worry, you still have Advanced controls) and there’s Franchise mode and the Madden Moments from the console editions (called Superstar Challenge), but the on-field action looks and sounds too similar to last year’s game. Don’t get us wrong; it’s still fun and great way to take Madden on the go, but we expected something more.

Celebrate Madden football’s 20th anniversary with EA Sports’ latest installment, Madden NFL 09. A Tron inspired Virtual Trainer helps determine your Madden IQ as well as your gridiron skills, allowing the computer to adjust to your football prowess. On-field prompts give you hints on how to avoid enormous defensive lineman. Impressive weather effects blanket the fields in snow or muck up jerseys as players slide in the mud. In addition, 34 Madden Moments challenge you to complete some of last season’s most memorable games, including the Giants improbable Super Bowl victory. Tom Hammond’s robotic commentary and the weak presentation fail to capture the NFL’s excitement, but those are small issues compared to 32 player online leagues, Fantasy Football, Franchise and Superstar Modes. So adjust your digital chinstrap, stare down the other team and fling the football around the field. Touchdown.

Madden NFL 09 Review (PS3)

Madden NFL 09 hits the PlayStation 3 gridiron and delivers hard-hitting football. A couple of the newer additions don’t work as well as they should, such as the unbalanced Madden Test and the cheat-happy EA Rewind. Others, though, are spectacular, such as the Virtual Training Center and the new Online League play. The gameplay holds up nicely and the presentation is better than ever, particularly with the new ActionCam. Madden NFL 09 is a fine addition to the 20 year franchise. Let’s see where the next 20 take us.

Madden NFL 09 Review (Wii)

Madden NFL 09 for Wii has something to offer for both dedicated and casual players. Its All-Play feature makes it approachable no matter what your skill level. Getting into the motion controls is incredibly easy, whether you execute a Hail Mary pass or dance after a big play. EA Tiburon also threw in Wii-accessible goodies, including a 5-On-5 party mode (which surprisingly outperforms EA’s NFL Tour), mini-games, online play through the Wi-Fi Connection and the ability to create your own pass plays. It comes up short in certain areas when compared to the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions, but that doesn’t stop it from being the best Wii football game.

NFL Head Coach 09 Review

Armchair quarterbacks interested in coaching should grab their digital clipboards and immerse themselves in NFL Head Coach 09. This comprehensive coaching simulation charges you with leading a pro football team to greatness or failure, but it goes far beyond simple play calling. An extensive Career mode forces you to make tons of important decisions, such as cutting and drafting players, making trades, teaching the playbook and even dealing with fan morale. You’ll sub players due to injuries, run across knuckleheads that don’t know their way around the field and watch helplessly as your quarterback throws interceptions. In addition, an online mode lets you match wits with other would be coaches, while a play creator allows you to customize your own offensive and defensive schemes. It’s a daunting video game, one that lacks a tutorial mode and assumes you know something about coaching, but if you consider yourself the next Bill Belichick (without the spying), NFL Head Coach 09 is an essential purchase and a good companion to the upcoming season.

Bionic Commando Rearmed Review

Bionic Commando Rearmed is Capcom’s latest downloadable retro revamp, and it’s the company’s best. Everything you know and love from the classic NES Bionic game is back, including challenging level design, tons of shoot-em-up action and a bionic arm that requires some strategy to utilize. The revamped graphics and music are wonderful, and the additional co-op and multiplayer modes are fun with others, even though they’re offline only. The difficulty ramps up quickly, especially once you get to the game’s 50+ Challenge Rooms. Considering you can’t jump, it might become frustrating for some of you. Still, for $10, this game is worth grasping onto.

Too Human Review

Outside of those with a fond desire to see Norse mythology fused with cybernetics, Too Human does too many things wrong to appeal to anyone. Its role-playing elements prove uninteresting, with an unbalanced upgrade system and no major differences between the five available classes. Its fighting is stale, with loose multi-directional melee combat and horribly broken long-range targeting. Finally, the presentation falls short, with unpolished visuals and bothersome glitches.
